M6.8 earthquake strikes Indonesia's island of Sulawesi - CGTN

A 6.8-magnitude earthquake jolted waters near the Indonesian island of Sulawesi on Friday, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS).

The quake took place at 7:40 p.m. local time with a depth of 17.5 kilometers, USGS said. 

The tsunami warning has been issued and some residents in central Sulawesi were advised to evacuate, Reuters reported citing local official. 

There were no immediate reports of casualties or damages.

Indonesia sits on the Pacific Ring of Fire, which is the line along tectonic plates that circles the entire Pacific Rim where frequent quakes and volcanic eruptions occur.
